ORDINANCE

$0.00

One quarter hour ago they lay stacked in their silos. But now, scavenged into sharp beaks and carried on the cries of falcon, they are ordinance. Fired from height. Slicing through sunlight. They pelt the ground with the fury of nature fighting back.

100 days more and their stalks have shot through dead dirt and even in cracks in concrete to drink in the radiation, not just of the sun but of disaster. Yellow and reaching, thirty three rough and paper thin hands explode out—Back to the sun which gives their name. Bombs to healers. Their roots reclaim the earth.

Ultimately, this is why I love sunflowers. Not just (as is common knowledge now) because they can turn back damage not even devils should be able to do—the damage of warheads and nukes, and meltdowns—but because they look like that part inside me. That part which explodes with happy fury—that hopeful part that wraps my heart warm and keeps me carrying on. This painting began as that feeling—a joy and hope which beat back against the anxiety of looking around and seeing a world not built for me. But as paint slapped down on canvas thick and undiluted it became a sunflower. Became a conviction that the world didn’t have to be built for me. No, I was shot down into the dirt to grow tall and brilliant and to take back the earth and the sky for beauty. I’d build for myself. I’d build for you. I’d pay no heed to asphalt or concrete.
